Teasers

My
ears lifted, pointed, flared out. My eyes burned, the particular
sensation of my panther eyes coming forth. Another growl and my jaw
lengthened, hardened, my nose now picking up every odor surrounding me,
including the sickly odor of the poison flowing thick and strong beneath
 my skin.
My hands transitioned smoothly into paws, my fingernails
curving into deadly-sharp claws. I stretched out, lengthened my back,
and let the panther take control.

~~~~~
The lab was cold and silent as Logan breathed deep, drawing the fire
through his body and centering the molten energy within his mind. The
mouse shivered in his hand, its sickly green eyes staring up at him, its
 expression sad and seemingly pleading. The little, large-eyed
white-furred creature had been shaved to reveal its bare skin, enabling
Logan and the lab-techs to assess how well the fire was progressing in
killing the poison.
~~~~~

As the glass hit the ground, water burst from it like a geyser, spraying droplets all over the kitchen. And all over me.
Good job, Odel. Now who's going to clean up this mess?
Lying where I fell, my face rested close to my poison-wreathed arm. I
stared at it as it throbbed and pulsed, as if the poison had taken on a
life of its own and was just waiting for the next moment to advance
farther into my flesh.
Who knew a tiny piece of Wraith-sword could be this deadly?

Meet the Author

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognise that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practise given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each other's loves – it works wonderfully…

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.

 formidable frost giants and the hated God

 Loki, but she must also find a balance between

 what she will lose and what she will gain.

Book Review

This book starts off in such a tragic and sad way, right away my heart was breaking for my favorite Valkyrie Heroine Bryn. To go through the pain and torture she went through and endured I couldn’t even imagine. To know you lost the one thing that you had come to love and cherish. But Bryn is strong and she rises above. Not only does she lose something very close and dear to her, she also begins to lose someone she loves, or thought she loved. But if I know my Bryn she is going to forge ahead and do some serious butt kicking. That is part of the charm of Bryn that I just fell in love with in book one.

This book was beyond anything I expected. I won't lie when I say Bryn was and still is my absolute favorite character in this series, and honestly in all the books I have read about Norse/Greek mythology and Valkyrie’s. From the beginning of book One (Dead Radiance) all the way through to the end of book Three (Dead Chaos) I have loved her courage, strength, fortitude, compassion her ability to never give up and her wit.

As I have said in my reviews of Dead Radiance and Dead Embers, I have always had a fascination with Valkyrie, Odin, Freya, Loki, Thor, Einherjar and let us not forget the ever loveable, ever annoying Hugin. LOL Gosh I love that black bird. LOL :) You just can’t go wrong with Hugin on your side. And I loved the introduction of Odin’s wolf dogs that are bestowed upon Bryn. Nice little doggies they are :)

The author does an amazing job with the characters, bringing them to life, their interactions and the storyline is very believable as it was with books 1 and 2.

After everything that Bryn goes through in this book, anyone else would have caved and thrown in the towel, crawled into a hole. But not her, she rises above and continues to stand true to herself, her beliefs and to fight for Asgard and Valhalla and for all of her friends, Gods and herself. Each batter she loses something, but in the end comes out ahead gaining more than she bargained for. Her last battle in the book is awesome and love how “name not being offered so as not to spoil” throws a tantrum like a baby. LOL So nice to see that. LOL But the loss that comes from this battle broke my heart and had my grabbing for my tissue and crying big time.

And um excuse me - HELLO CLIFF HANGER!!!!! T.G. you are so not nice. And we need to have a little talk - I can’t believe you did that - OMG the ending - okay everyone just be prepared go ahead and walk to the edge of the cliff and jump because that is exactly what happens here you jump because you can’t wait to turn the page and find out what happens and T.G. Ayers leaves you in a free fall - ROFL man I so threw a temper tantrum myself - okay maybe I should take lessons from one of the gods in this story. LOL That was like riding on a roller coaster, heading into the loop and then the loop disappears and you are sent hurtling into thin air. LOL

Oh and the revelation that Bryn receives just before that cliffhanger I did not see that coming but what an awesome twist to the story. Job well done on that one - Cuddo’s. Let me just say if you have not read this series what are you waiting for? You are truly missing out on a fabulous story here.

Thank you for the honor of being able to read the next installment in this series.

About Book

Valkyrie-in-training Bryn Halbrook just can’t catch a break. With her boyfriend stuck in Hel and the taunting laughter of Loki still ringing in her ears, she struggles to concentrate on her training and duties in Odin’s realm. The last thing she expects or wants is more adventure—but then treachery, a shocking abduction and a chilling discovery send her forth on another perilous, globe-hopping mission.
As the ultimate battle, Ragnarok, draws closer, it’s a race against time for Bryn, Fenrir and their team to discover who kidnapped her foster brother from the halls of Asgard and what’s causing the mysterious deaths of so many of Odin’s chosen warriors.
In the exciting sequel to DEAD RADIANCE, Bryn encounters dwarfs and dragons, new friends and old foes—but the worst enemy of all may be the person she trusts most!

My Thoughts

Like the first book I loved this one just as much, loved it even more as it literally picked up right where Dead Radiance left off. I love that there was no lapse in time. No scratching your head wondering hummm how did they get there, it seamlessly moved from one book right into the next.

Bryn is as feisty as ever I really love that about her. And right from the start the action begins and Aidan is ripped from her arms even after successfully retrieving the desired jewel the goddess Freya wanted.

Bright red blood, Aidan’s blood, dripped from my quivering hands, warm and sticky like honey. Yet there was nothing sweet or pleasant about having the warm ruby liquid seep into the whorls of my fingers and stain my hands and my clothing.
I blinked.
The sounds of the Great Hall simmered around me, fading into the shadows of my despair. Only the rabid cackle of Loki’s laughter filtered through my sorrow. The rattle of his chains echoed in my ears as Fenrir dragged him away.
My heart breaks for Bryn she had finally forgiven Aidan and had risked her life and his to save his life from the curse that Freya had put on him all for her precious gem. Only to have his life possibly taken anyway and sent to Hell to hopefully save him but never knowing if she would ever see him again.
But she wasn’t allowed to wallow in that sorrow to long – nope Fenrir had other plans for her and the warriors needed her, something was going on and she needed to be ready, but to be completely ready she had to learn to fly. Okay I have to admit I am like way jealous because there are days I am sitting in traffic to or from work and if I had wings like Bryn had wings I would be flying every day. No worries about gas prices, traffic, flat tires, overheated engines. Me and the great blue sky….

“This is your training ground.”
Fen’s voice echoed around us, reverberating on my eardrums as I breathed the icy air deep into my lungs. The valley floor lay far, far below, almost as far down as Odin’s castle on the other side of the mountain. At least the trip down would be easier than our muscle-burning hike up.
I hoped.
Fen folded his arms and faced me, his face as shadowed and unrelenting as the rock-faces hemming the valley in. “Are you ready, Valkyrie Brynhildr?”
I nodded, clenching my jaw and lifting my chin a fraction. He’d used my full given name, a name that reminded me of my one claim to fame – being a close of the real Warrior Princess Brunhilde, who’d lived and died centuries before I’d even been a figment of my father’s crazed imagination.
“You do have to remove your cloak, you know,” Fen tempered his dry tone with a sudden cheeky grin, for a brief moment transforming his forbidding, hooded features into a genial, approachable face.
I threw him a reluctant, tight smile, undid the ornate clasp at my neck and dropped the dark, silky cloak over the nearest boulder.
“Very good. Now face the edge of the cliff. And jump.” He spoke the words so matter-of-factually he might as well have invited me for a cappuccino.
“You’re kidding right?” I asked in horror, half believing he meant his words, half unable to think straight. The sober glance he threw me squashed my urge to burst into laughter.
I risked a peek over the edge.
No way in hell is he serious. No frigging’ way.
Does she learn to fly – get the book and find out I won’t tell you (No spoilers here) but I will say that is one seriously intense scene right there how it unfolds, what transpires between Bryn and Fen really threw curve balls at me and then the surprising twist. My emotions just in this one section went from HOLY FRIGGING CRAP to OH NO HE DIDN’T to BWAHAHAHAHAHA all within a few pages.
And Hugin yes he is still in this book and still his ever cryptic self – oh I love this bird and how he gets Bryn all riled up every time he is sent somewhere with him. The conversations she has with him and the thoughts she has about him kept me rolling. I swear every time I thought she couldn’t top herself she threw another zinger out there. Where else can you get laughter from a Valkyrie and a Raven then right here in the pages of Dead Embers.

My feet trod a path of shattered stones that covered raw, black soil; the stones clattered underfoot like a chorus of chattering teeth. Ominous sounds that sent strange chills down my back. Dark trees loomed over me, limbs creaking eerily in the still air. Every tree stood stripped of its leaves, blackened, bark-bare and as bleak as the low sky above us. The hairs on the back of my neck prickled, and I was sure the trees reached out to grab hold of me. I blinked, then laughed at myself. Scaredy-cat. Shivering harder, I struggled to process this strange, bone-penetrating cold. Not a breeze stirred the icy air; no wind drifted past to shift the cold around.
I glared at Hugin.
Thanks for not telling me to bring warmer clothing. Blackbird.
What more could I expect from a birdbrain? The bundle of feathers probably had no idea how debilitating the cold was to me. And knowing him, he’d just say he didn’t tell me because I hadn’t asked. I huffed in silence.
This book delivered everything the first book did and more. The non-stop action, the nail biting moments, the grab your stomach and laugh at what comes out of Bryn’s mouth or just her thoughts and of course the turmoil of her heart for Aidan and her friend Joshua. I have to say the story the author wove in Dead Embers was truly amazing and I couldn’t put the book down. I read the entire book in one day.
Now to sit and wait, luckily not too long, for Dead Chaos which comes out in June and to see what happens next with Bryn, Aidan, Joshua, Fen and the rest.

About Book

Bryn Halbrook had always seen the glow. But it is only when her best friend dies that she discovers the meaning of those beautiful golden auras — Death. Alone, lost in the foster system, she struggles to understand who she is and why she was cursed with the ability to see the soon-to-be-dead.

The new foster kid, Aidan, isn’t helping any. Mr. Perfect seems to fit in no matter what, making her feel even more pathetic. But when his affections turn to her, Bryn finds him hard to resist. Impossible actually. A mystery himself, Aidan disappears, leaving behind a broken heart and a mysterious book that suggests Bryn might not be entirely human.

Bryn stands at the threshold of a journey of discovery. Will destiny help her find herself, find her purpose and her place in a world in which she’d never belonged?

Excerpt:That day I knew for sure. I'd lost control of my tears then. They fell in huge, mocking drops. I stared at Joshua through those bitter tears, my heart missing beats as I tried to remember to breathe.

I finally knew what the glow meant.
I was a freak and Joshua was going to die

My Thoughts

What can I say about this book besides you have to read it. I mean WOW what a great story this was and I can’t wait to get into book two. I loved the characters in this book from loner (in the beginning) Bryn to her foster mom Ms. Carver to the ever sexy biker boy Aidan. I mean OMG really, leather, motorcycle, cute butt, sexy eyes, what girl wouldn’t swoon over that, I know I was. When he first shows up in the story I was like rushing to get past Bryn and get him for myself – YEAH!!!! And lets not forget about the God Odin and Godess Freyja I mean hello perfectly done in here.
I have always loved the old Greek and Norse mythological stories. I have always believed that there has to be something to it – there are way to many stories out there for it to all just be made up. Some of my favorites were about Valhalla, Asgard, Odin and the dead who are brought back to Asgard by the Valkyrie. Imagine fighting for what you believe in, for good, having courage and dying for that cause. And in honor of that the amazing Odin and Freyja wanting you in one of their armies to fight in what is the greatest battle of all time for them. To be brought back by the beautiful and mythological Valkyrie. I mean hello YES!!!!!
And I love when an author researches their stories before they write them and use real facts not changing stuff to make their story “BETTER”. To me it is better when the real stuff is used not twisting the story with different places, names, etc. That takes away from it. I give huge cudo’s to the author for staying the path on this story.
The detail which the author used to describe Bryn’s (Brynhilda) transformation from the alone and lonely foster child to an amazing Valkyrie was so amazing it was like I was in the room watching this unfold. Like you could feel what was going on inside Bryn’s head and body. As well as her heart when she is suddenly face to face with the one she fell in love with who broke her heart. To the fight between her and another Valkyrie who holds a grudge. Ever nail biting moment, ever sweet tender kiss scene, every sad and heart breaking loss was felt. My emotions hit ever range reading this book.
Now to go buy another box of Kleenex so I can start reading book 2.
