Can she forgive Sirius in order to save her team and warn her colony?

Excerpt

A drone, as deep and low as the growl of a primordial beast, resonated in my gut and I yanked my hand away. My heart sped like someone had fired a starter gun to a race, and my chest tightened until I couldn’t breathe.

That blaring blasphemy wasn’t from my ship.

The sound tapered off, leaving me in silence. I stared at the bones, wondering if I’d imagined it, or if I should hide here in the ruins in case the sound came back.

What am I doing? I’m a team expedition leader, for crying out loud!

I pulled myself back together. Everyone else was attending the ceremony on the ship. The thick hull, designed to protect us from deep space, blocked all sounds from the outside world. I was the only one who would have heard it. The only one who could investigate. I thought about going back for help, but every second I delayed, the source of the sound could disappear. Besides, I didn’t want the credit taken away from me. Not this time.

I scrambled to the window and climbed over the ledge, throwing myself down so fast my ankles exploded in pain. Cursing, I hobbled up the embankment of the excavation site. The sound boomed around me, vibrating the crystals underneath my feet. I fell to my knees and covered my ears. It reminded me of warping metal, growling monsters, and screeching alarms all at the same time.

The sound came from the jungle. I pulled myself up the incline and peered over the edge. A dry, fiery breeze blew my hair back, and I looked above the rustling canopy.

My heart stammered then beat into a frenzy. A massive ring of a ship, twice as large as the New Dawn, hovered over the jungle. Spires jutted from the top and the bottom, like a two-sided pin cushion. Blinking reddish lights adorned the ends. The hull was a dull gray shield of impenetrable metal with no sight panels or markings of any kind.

The buzzing sound made my eardrums throb. I pressed my nose up against the crystal ledge and peered over as my whole body shook. The lowest spire, thick as a nuclear reactor, lengthened from the belly of the ship until the tip hovered a meter from the jungle canopy. A trap door opened, and a beam of white light seared a hole in the foliage. The smell of burnt vines choked my throat, and I cowered against the side of the ledge.

I have to warn the ship.

Our Interview

What would you have done differently if you was the main character of your book?

Gosh, I’m not sure. I have to really think about that. I wouldn’t have forgiven Sirius so easily. I tend to hold a grudge. So in that way, my main character is more understanding than I am! I probably would have been scared out of my wits by the giant alien monster spiders and unable to move- nevermind save everyone else. So, again, my character is more awesome than me. Oh well.

What was your inspiration behind this book?

I wanted to give my audience a big monster enemy, because the first book doesn’t have that. I hate spiders, so I thought- that’s perfect! My inspiration for the spiders came from many sources: Arachnophobia the 1990 movie, Shelob, the spider in LOTR, the spiders in Harry Potter, and- for some strange reason- the alien bugs in Starship Troopers.

Who designed your book cover for you ?

Naj. She’s awesome. She designs all the Inkspell covers and makes them all beautiful works of art that should be hanging in some art gallery somewhere.

Why did you become a writer ?

I loved reading, and I got bored and frustrated reading other people’s books. I wanted to have my own story with my own characters and have them do what I wanted them to do. Little did I know they have a mind of their own!

As a reader and writer I think it is important to get to know your fans and make a connection with them as an author who takes the extra step to hear what their fans think and want in there continued writing is continued success and key to selling more books .Do you agree with that ?

I love connecting with famous people, and the people I admire, so I want to give my fans that same happiness. I remember when a certain celebrity wrote me back on Twitter- I was on cloud nine for days. I saved the DM message in my email. So, if you write to me, I will write back!

Do you have a favorite author or authors?

Patricia McKillip, Tad Williams, Ursula Le Guin, Sherri S. Tepper, Orson Scott Card, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte. I could go on and on!

Do you like to write your books in a continuing series ?

Yes, I always feel like there is more story to tell. Even when I finished  the 4th book in my New Dawn series, I knew that wasn’t the “true” end.

If you could date any character from any book, who would it be and why?

Legolas from Lord of the Rings. Do I need to give a reason or is it apparent? LOL

How hard do you laugh when writing a funny scene?

I probably just smile at the computer screen.

What kinds of books do you like to read in your spare time ?

Epic fantasy is my favorite genre. Right now I’m reading Game of Thrones. I didn’t think I’d like it, because it’s so dark, but it turns out I LOVE it. I also try to read in all genres to broaden my writing skills.

Do you cry when writing sad scenes?

Not usually, but my scenes really aren’t all that sad for the most part. I try to write positive, uplifting fiction.

Thanks for the interview! Great questions!

About Book

Finding a new home has never been so dangerous.
Andromeda has spent all seventeen years of her life aboard a deep space transport vessel destined for a paradise planet. Her safe cocoon is about to break open as Paradise 21 looms only one month away, and she must take the aptitude tests to determine her role on the new world and her computer assigned lifemate. As a great-granddaughter of the Commander of the ship, she wants to live up to her family name. But, her forbidden love for her childhood friend, Sirius, distracts her and she fails the tests. The results place her in a menial role in the new colony and pair her with Corvus, “the oaf”.
But when Andromeda steps foot on Paradise 21, her predestined future is the least of her worries. Alien ghosts from a failed colonization warn her of a deadly threat to her colony. And when Sirius’s ship crashes on the far ridge in an attempt to investigate, she journeys to rescue him with Corvus.
Andromeda now must convince the authorities of the imminent danger to protect her new home. What she didn’t expect was a battle of her own feelings for Sirius and Corvus.
Can she save the colony and discover her true love?

My Thoughts

Andromeda has a destiny, one she doesn’t think she is right for. Why her? That is what she thinks. Always feeling like she was in the deep end struggling and never getting anywhere. She loved the adventures her and Sirius went on, she slacked off, didn’t study hard enough even though she knew how important it was, and what the outcome could mean.
Sirius is the handsome guy who gets Andromeda’s heart all in a flutter, but also seems to get her into trouble. It seems like every adventure they go on something always happens. Though you sort of can’t blame them for these adventures. Being stuck on a ship out in space headed to the unknown, the uncertain – I too would be going stir crazy.
Andromeda’s parents expect so much of her, she knows it, she feels it and struggles with it. All she wants is to be with Sirius. And as an important day comes that will determine what job she will have and who her life partner will be once they get to their new paradise arrives she realizes at the last minute how much she wish she had prepared. I got to tell you I was never one for taking tests in school but I was sitting there yelling at her saying come one wake up girl, one your great grandfather is like in charge of the entire ship you are on – you got this girl – you can do it – but get off your keaster and study already. LOL Well lets just say she is wishing she had studied harder. Thought happy with her job she is devastated with her life partner she is assigned to.
On a strange new planet with a new life, job and life partner she never wanted slowly Andormeda starts to expand and try to do better. I actually love her sometimes petulant attitude, thought it seems to always get her into some kind of predicament I can understand at her age why she would feel the way she does. And slowly she starts to see things and people in a different light. She also see’s things that scare her and cause her to fear for her life and those of her people and their new colony.
The trouble this girl gets into when they first arrive just makes you want to slap your head and go “Doih!” not again Andromeda – seriously didn’t you realized after the first one. But what I really liked was how Corvus her life partner continued to support her after every one of them and even took her on an adventure that I just have to say was pretty darn cool if you asked me.
With people falling sick, strange things that she keeps seeing, Andromeda and her mom struggle to find out what is making people sick and killing them, and she is struggling with what to do with what she has seen. She is determined to figure it out and keep the people of her new colony safe no matter what it takes. But will anyone believe her?
She is afraid to say anything, people would think her crazy, I mean come on its Andromeda. I know I probably would if I hadn’t watched all her escapades – LOL. But she is on a mission to find out what is out there, what is causing all this, she enlists someone she thinks she can trust and hopes she is right. But something happens (doesn’t it always) and now she has to make it right. But the one person who comes out to help her surprises her, and she see’s him in a whole new light.
I loved this book – loved the angst and struggles of Andromeda. I can’t say typical teenage girl because I have never met a teenage girl who has lived on a ship floating around space all her life headed to a planet they only know about from research teams, a great grandfather who has lived hundreds of years and runs the ship. Yeah can’t really say she is typical in our standards, but I get her struggles, I get her not wanting to go to the unknown, to stay where she feels safe, and secure, and she knows what is there and what is next… or does she.
This book was super good – now onto book 2….
