Release Event for Legal Affairs: Objection by Sawyer Bennett

An Adult Contemporary Romance Serial Series
By Bestselling Author Sawyer Bennett

Legal Affairs: Objection is FREE for a limited time.

One year ago, I graduated from law school and embarked on a career as a purveyor of high priced legal shenanigans.
Six months ago, my boyfriend dumped me when I thought he might be proposing.
Two weeks ago, I got drunk and joined a secret sex club.
Two days ago, I had a torrid one-night stand with a stranger.
Today? Well, today I’m contemplating having an affair with my boss.
Matt Connover is all kinds of forbidden temptation wrapped up in a deliciously wicked package, and he’s made it clear… he’s only interested in sex.
My name is McKayla Dawson but everyone calls me Mac. I work at the powerhouse firm of Connover & Crown, LLP, where the law has never felt so hot.
But between you and me, I’m afraid my heart won’t survive these Legal Affairs.

Why I Decided To Write A Serial
By Sawyer Bennett

Serials can be frustrating to some readers. Me personally? What bugs me about them is the waiting time between releases and wondering when the end will come. So I kept that in mind when I launched into Legal Affairs and decided to release them quickly, cheaply and with a definite ending.

I wanted to try a new project, coming off the heels of the Off Series which was very successful. I had a very specific formula in mind… sexy + funny. I also wanted to try my hand at writing a legal themed book since I’m a lawyer by first trade. With this new formula, I thought… “Why not try a serial, where I could make each volume like an episode of ‘must see TV’ where you had a single story line that was actually part of a bigger picture?”

Legal Affairs was soon born of those thoughts. I decided to limit the series to just six volumes, each about 12,000 words or so, with the series finale coming in at just over 17,000 words. I bumped up the heat factor, so beware… this is hotter than the Off Series. I blushed when my mom read it. Blushed again when the lawyers in my firm read it.

Overall, I loved how it turned out. I felt I was able to convey a realistic struggle between the hero and heroine, with each volume having a true conflict that was resolved for that particular story line, but still made you wonder if they would get their HEA in the end.

More than anything, Legal Affairs is a test of sorts. I wanted to see how well I could mesh my knowledge of the law into a steamy romance. My hope is that if Legal Affairs is successful, I will do a full length novel series with a similar theme. Maybe a law firm filled with sexy, quirky lawyers that may be a bit unethical but in the end want justice for their clients. I’ll add in plenty of snark, humor… and oh, yeah… hot sex!!  Think of it as Sex In The City meets Ally McBeal.

Legal Affairs is a serial romance with a whole lot of hot and a little bit of funny. It has six volumes that will be released every two weeks, the first one, entitled Objection, on January 10, 2014.

Legal Affairs – Objection – releasing January 10, 2014
Legal Affairs – Stipulation – releasing January 24, 2014
Legal Affairs – Violation – releasing February 7, 2014
Legal Affairs – Mitigation – releasing February 21, 2014
Legal Affairs – Reparation – releasing March 7, 2014
Legal Affairs – Affirmation – releasing March 21, 2014

Legal Affairs: Objection is FREE for a limited time. Each installment thereafter will be priced at .99 cents.

Excerpt 1:

When we arrive on our floor we head to our rooms, politely bidding each other goodnight. Just as I am about to enter mine, I remember I have his jacket. I can use this to have just one more moment with him tonight. I knock on his door, his lips slightly open when he sees me on the other side.
“You forgot your jacket.” It is still on my shoulders. I turn around to offer it up to him.
“Thank you Shy,” As he says this he takes both of his hands, grabbing each shoulder of the jacket and oh so slowly pulls it off of me, grazing my bare arms and back as he pulls it off. I close my eyes taking in his touch. Each caress of his fingertips feels like one thousand little sparks. How can just the faintest touch from this man set me off like this? Please kiss me. Kiss my neck. I won’t say no. I hold my position for a second more than I should, but it feels so tortuously long. There is nothing, not another touch, not a kiss. I turn to face him again and bid him goodnight. His face looks sad, almost guilty. Every word, every touch, every action tonight was an implication. This keeps us safe from one another. It keeps me safe from him.

“Goodnight Shy,” he says as if dismissing me from his presence.

“Goodnight Taylor.”

Now that her beloved brother is dead and she's confined to a wheelchair, her future is but a dark cloud hovering above her head. How can she ever find the will to move on and keep living without him? Even the cares of the happy-go-lucky American physiotherapist who's helping her with her rehab therapies are all in vain. Life seems to have lost its meaning, until one night she receives an unexpected celestial visit…
Colin has been working as a physiotherapist in Dublin for almost five years, but he’s never bonded so much with a patient like he is bonding with Kathleen; there's something about those sad blue eyes that makes him want to help her, to take away the pain that reminds him so much of his own. Having lost both his parents in a plane crash when he was only sixteen, Colin knows how it feels to have someone you love taken so abruptly away from you, and he makes it his mission to help Kathleen find her faith in life again. But something changes along the way…
Sometimes love can work miracles. If you believe.

Excerpt

“Fancy a snow fight?”
The male voice by my bed startled me, and I turned back to find Colin standing right next to me, that cute grin of his spread across his face.
“I doubt they make skiing wheelchairs,” I mumbled, just as grumpy as usual. He chuckled, deliberately ignoring my tone.
“Don’t make up excuses: you don’t want to challenge me because you know I’m gonna thrash you, hands down. I was the best snow fighter in New York City.”
I raised an eyebrow, amused at the way he always tried to cheer me up whenever I wanted to drown in sorrow. When I’d first arrived here at the hospital his happy-go-lucky attitude had driven me crazy; I’d hated it and wished he’d just leave me alone. He’d never be able to understand how I felt and should stop pretending he cared.
After he told me what had happened to his parents, though, I realized we had more things in common than I’d thought. We’d felt the same overwhelming pain, and he was only trying to help me get over it using his own life experience.
“Do you annoy all of your patients, or have I just been picked as the lucky one?”
He grinned again and I noticed how attractive he was when he did that, especially when his dimples showed up; he looked younger and more carefree, and it felt as if he were my friend rather than my physio.
I hadn’t seen him for two days and I’d found myself wondering more than once where he was and if he was with another girl. We’d never really gotten too personal during our chats so I didn’t know if he was single or in a steady relationship. The thought made me feel a little uneasy and, since my parents had come to see me over the weekend, I hadn’t had much time to dwell too much on that thought—or on that weird feeling that made my heart flutter every time he was around. Now, as we engaged in further friendly banter, I realized I’d sort of missed him.
“Hmm…let’s say you’re my new challenge, so I won’t leave you alone until I’m finished with you. You’d better start getting used to it, kiddo.”
“That sounds scary,” I said, putting on a mock terrified expression. “I think I might ask to be assigned to another physio, just to be sure.”
He gave a mischievous laugh and I couldn’t help but smile. His giggle was becoming contagious.
“Whoa, is that a smile?” he asked, his eyes wide in disbelief. “The Ice Queen is starting to melt! Now I understand why it’s snowing: it’s all your fault!”
I laughed. “I can be happy and funny, you know? At least, I used to be, before my life changed so drastically.”
“You’re saying you were fun to be around? Hmm…I can’t picture you as the life of the party. No,” he said, shaking his head dramatically. “Definitely can’t.”
I smiled sheepishly. “Well, not the life of the party, but if you asked my brother he would tell you a few stories that…” I stopped mid-sentence when I realized this was never going to happen, and I felt the familiar lump in my throat come back as tears filled my eyes for the hundredth time since the accident. I was starting to get sick of those tears.
He noticed the sudden mood swing and sat on my bed, looking at me with the sweet expression he put on every time he wanted to comfort me.
“Maybe after I’m finished with you, you’ll be able to be the life of the party again.” He grinned, and I felt a twinge of hope flicker inside my heart. “I’d like to see that, you know. Maybe I’ll throw a party just to see you go wild.”

About the Author

An avid reader since her childhood years and being an only child, Roberta always enjoyed the company of her fictional friends from the children’s books she loved reading, while she dreamed of writing her own stories one day.
It was when she discovered novels by authors Rosamunde Pilcher and Maeve Binchy in her teenage years that she realized it was time she put down in words the stories she had kept well hidden in her mind until then.
What started as a hobby, soon turned into a real passion and a way of life, until she could no longer keep the stories to herself, and decided to get over her fears and share them with the world.
Roberta lives in Italy, but her dream is to move out of her country and live either in a thatched cottage in the Irish countryside or in a country house with a swing on the back porch, somewhere in the United States, where she would love to spend her days writing novels as a full-time job, and maybe one day even get as far as writing a screenplay for a movie.

Book Description:

Photographs.
Images. Snapshots in time.
This is how I experience my life. I’ve hidden behind my camera and viewed the world through the lens. I watch other people live their lives. I’ve given up on my dreams, and sheltered my heart from love; because both have given me nothing but pain. Even thinking about opening myself up, sends my fears into overdrive. It’s better to be safe, than to take a risk and have your life shattered into pieces alongside your heart. This is what I believed.
Dangerous.
Risks. Fear Nothing.
I live for the rush of adrenaline I get when I work my stunts. Nothing else matters but the feel of my heart pounding when I challenge the line between life and death. Women are nothing more than a distraction; they use me for my connections, as I use them to escape the pain of my past before moving on to my next adrenaline fix. My life is consumed with excitement, danger and risks—it’s all I needed.
 Denials.
Fear. The complete wrong time.
Jasmin and Jet will face off over photos, stunts and the truth hidden in their hearts.  The last person Jasmin wants to be with is a man who takes life for granted.  Jet wants to give his heart to no one; especially one who might not understand the secrets that haunt him. Despite their protests, Jasmin’s and Jet’s lives tangle; the threads of love and fear bind them. Between their passions and their pasts, they fight to hang onto each other . . . but will the stakes be too high when faced with the ultimate sacrifice?

Excerpt #1

Jogging to the stairs, I put Elise from my mind . . . something that was easy to do when I got a glimpse at the girl walking up the stairs, a camera slung around her neck. Photographer or tourist? She had long, wavy, dark hair that was causally messy and gave me an instant itch to bury my fingers into it; to see if it was as thick and silky as it looked. Grinning, I thought about Hugh’s suggestion and it suddenly seemed like a very good idea. I slowed my steps so we met on the next landing. I stood between her and the stairs going up, put on my best, crooked grin—the one that had earned me cookies, women and jobs, depending on my age.
“I’m sorry, you can’t go up there; it’s a closed set. I’m afraid I’ll have to escort you back to the lobby.” I pointed to the lower stairs, and then folded my arms across my chest, grinning like a fool. A whiff of perfume curled around me and the smile on my face stretched wider; she smelled like heaven, whispers of flowers and moonlit nights. Shit, I was damn near poetic in my musings.
Her eyes flicked up to mine, surprise crossing her face, but it was me who caught my breath. Her eyes were green, shadowed with a dark ring of black, smoky and full of depth. Those eyes sucked me in with an effortlessness that shot through my body. And although the beauty of her eyes was undeniable, there was something else, a quality I couldn’t put my finger on, a softness that I hadn’t seen since what seemed like a lifetime ago . . . .
“I have a pass,” she said, her sweetly husky voice coiling around me, lingering on my skin as if she’d touched me with her fingertips. She held up a tag and a camera that hung from her neck. “I have an appointment waiting for me.”
I gave into temptation, stepping closer to her, drinking her in; the curve of her cheek, the sudden hollow in her throat as she took a deep surprised breath. She blushed; she actually blushed! How long had it been since I met someone who wasn’t skilled at playing men? Who hadn’t worked what they’d wanted from the man in question and then left as soon as they could?
This girl was no model, no actress, not because she wasn’t beautiful, but because she was dressed in a t-shirt and cut off shorts with no name brand, and scuffed running shoes that had seen better days. Inwardly, I heaved a sigh of relief. She wouldn’t be after anything I had to offer, no connections for this girl.
She was perfect.
I continued to smile, feeling the tension between us and the pounding of my heart, like I was about to pull off a particularly risky move; knowing by the way her eyes dilated she felt the . . . whatever it was between us too.
“Excuse me, I don’t want to be late.” She tried to step around me, and I followed her, making sure to keep my distance, but not letting her get away from me. God damn, she was fine. Natural, that’s what it was; she had a natural beauty untouched by surgery, Botox or heavy make-up. She was clean and fresh, something I’d almost forgotten existed.
I wanted to taste her. Without another thought, I lifted my hand to brush along the edge of her jaw, her skin like satin under my fingers. Her eyes widened, dilating further as her mouth pursed and her jaw tightened. Such a mixture of desire and denial in those deep green eyes. The emerald color flashed with irritation, sparkling as if on fire—green fire to burn me all the way to my soul and back, if I let it. I stifled a shiver of anticipation, my muscles tensing, prepping me to move fast. To move in for the killer kiss that would seal the deal, leave her at my mercy.
The way she stood, the tension in her muscles, the spark of fire in her eyes at being touched without permission, all told me she wasn’t like the other girls. Which only made me more certain that I wanted her.
She was exactly what I’d been looking for without even knowing it.
I closed the distance between us, the tension in her body vibrating off her skin. She lifted her chin, eyes snapping with impatience, and put a finger to my chest, poking at me.
“I said excuse me; I meant it. I have a meeting, and I don’t think he will appreciate me being late. He’s a busy man.”
“What kind of meeting?” My lips quirked upward; damn, she had some spunk too. This was looking better and better. “You don’t mean like the kind of meeting that pays you by the hour, do you?” I had no such thoughts, but I couldn’t resist teasing her.
Her mouth dropped open. “I would . . . never . . . ugh!”
I held up my hands. “I had to ask. Because if we’re going to continue this relationship I need to make sure that I’m your one and only. I don’t share well, nor do I play well with others.”
She drew herself up, reached out and for a split second I thought she was going to touch my face, maybe even cup my chin for a kiss. Nope, not my Spitfire.
She grabbed my ear, twisted it hard, and punctuated her words with increased pressure and torque. “I will never be your one and only; it’s none of your business why I’m here, now get out of my way.”
I yelped, unable to pull away from her hand and my ear, which she continued to clutch as she dragged and pushed me from my place in front of the stairs.
“What the hell was that?” I griped as she let go and I put a hand over my now throbbing ear.
“That was a move I learned to use on my brother when he was being a pain in my butt.” She snapped over her shoulder as she strode up the stairs, long legs eating up the steps, her pert little ass beckoning me with each sway of her softly rounded hips.
Well, I’ll be damned.
I scrubbed at my ear and let her go; if she was here on some sort of assignment, I would track her down. I stared up the stairs, listening to the woman’s footsteps grow distant. To be fair, I’d have followed her if it wasn’t for Elise waiting at the top for me.
“Spitfire, don’t forget me!” I called up the stairwell.
“Shut up!” She shouted back.
