#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward’s “instantly addictive”* novels of the Black Dagger Brotherhood continue as an ally of the Brotherhood must face his own dark desires....

Butch O’Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard-living ex–homicide cop, he’s the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world. He’s got nothing to lose. His heart belongs to a female vampire, an aristocratic beauty who’s way out of his league. If he can’t have Marissa, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers.

Fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he’s found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back. But even her love may not be enough to save him.

Butch is one of our favorite characters in this series. We love his connection with Vishous, their strong friendship, and how Butch complements V perfectly. Despite being human among vampires, Butch seamlessly fits in with the Brotherhood. We enjoyed every aspect of Butch's story, from discovering his purpose and legacy to his life before and after becoming involved with the vampires. His romance with Marissa and his bromance with Vishous added depth to his character. Our feelings about Marissa were mixed, but we believed she was perfect for Butch. Despite her situation as Wrath's intended without being his shellan, we sympathized with her naivety, likely a result of growing up sheltered in the glymera. The ongoing fight to save the vampire race ensures there is never a dull moment among the Brotherhood. After overcoming misunderstandings, Marissa and Butch confess their love, and their relationship faces various challenges. However, their love remains unwavering. Two standout moments in the plot for us were Butch's humorous interactions with the Scribe Virgin and Marissa's impressive display of strength and determination towards the end of the book. Numerous changes occur throughout the plot, some surprising and others welcome, all of which we appreciated. The ending, in particular, stood out as our favorite.
