Excerpt #1

We sat across from each other at a small, round, wooden table in the crowded restaurant where Tara had insisted on eating. It seemed swanky with its beige table clothes and polished silverware, and we’d had to drive a few miles to reach it. The occupants of the tables around us were largely wealthy looking Latinos and people of Afro-Caribbean decent. The restaurant felt more crowded than it actually was because the tables had been pressed together to form a clearing where a few couples danced. Tara tapped her fingers against the table rhythmically to the beat of a heavily Caribbean infused song. An awkward silence spread between us. I thought she was crazy, and she was obviously aware of the fact. That caused a bit of discomfort, I guess. The idea that she found my suspicion amusing made me even more convinced that she was an insane asylum escapee.
"You are being unusually quiet," I said, leaning across the table and placing my hand on top of hers, effectively stopping the tapping.
She looked at me with a challenge in her eyes. "How would you know," she paused dramatically, "Dylan?"
I rolled my eyes. "Oh, please. Don't start with that reincarnation crap."
Her eyes narrowed. She looked dangerous. "Crap? Really? You can call what we shared crap? That’s just insensitive."
"Tara, I don't remember. This all sounds far-fetched to me." I softened my voice as I tried to calm her. If she was dangerous, I didn’t want to upset her before I got the hell away from her.
She nodded. "Fine. Why am I here with you? Why did you even ask me to come if this is all crap to you?"
I shrugged. Why had I asked her? The truth was that I wanted to be around her. Crazy or not, I needed to get to know her. I couldn’t explain it, so instead, I lied. “I was hungry and thought you might be too.”
“Huh. Well, let’s order and eat so I can get the hell out of here.” Her voice dripped with annoyance.
“Tara, can’t we just get to know each other?”
She shot daggers at me with her eyes. “I already know you.”

Author Interview

Why did you become a writer ?

I don’t think I made the decision to become a writer. I just have always wrote. I’d get journals for christmas and I’d fill them with stories of the people in the Alloy, Delia*s and Girlfriend LA catalogues. Even the short MoxieGirl Magalog. I also don’t have a drive or the ability to do anything else.

As a reader and writer I think it is important to get to know your fans and make a connection with them as an author who takes the extra step to hear what their fans think and want in their continued writing is continued success and key to selling more books .Do you agree with that?

All the Indie writers I know do this. It is very important for us as small press and Indie authors. We don’t have a big company with big money behind us. I am not knocking the big six authors, I consider a lot of them my friends as well but ya know. If indies want to thrive we have to be very social. Airicka Phoenix is awesome at this, Lizzy Ford, I can really go on. I chat with a lot of Indie authors as a fan, daily. I can go down my timeline. Cameo Renae, Magan Vernon, Monique O’Connor James (I met her as a fangirl and she ended up publishing The Reborn.) I really can go on. Samantha Young, Jessica Sorensen, I will just say Indies are some of those most down to earth writers ever.

Do you have a favorite author or authors?

I do. I have too many to list them all so if I miss some I am sorry guys. Inger Iversen is one. I read Few Are Angels and I went out and cyber stalked her demanding she be my friend. Jeri Smith Ready, Victoria Dahl, Emma Petersen, Ellie James, Shannon Delany, Stacey Rourke and Niecey Roy just to name a few.

Do you like to write your books in a continuing series ?

I do because it allows me time to tell multiple stories with the same characters. I can explore the world more.

If you could date any character from any book, who would it be and why?

Last week I would have said Dylan Fourcade...actually I did say that last week. BUT I have since read The Rise of Xosha by S Cu’Anam Policar and Pyre has stolen my heart completely. Yum. He is arrogant but affectionate when he loves. I just think he is everything a guy should be. Like my heart it all his. Sorry Dylan,

What kinds of books do you like to read in your spare time ?

Paranormal romance of any kind rather YA, NA or adult...just yes. Any contemporary romance by Niecey Roy or Victoria Dahl because they make me laugh, have real characters and write sexy time like no other.

Do you cry  when writing sad scenes?

Yes. I cried during the final scenes of The Reborn. I put my characters through hell. :(

Did you have a Cover Designer ?

Yes, my publishers hired them. But with my book I am self publishing I got to pick my own designer.  For Reborn we used Jamie Lynn Dougherty or rather the uber-talented Jamie Lynn Dougherty https://www.facebook.com/#!/jaylynnscraps

Who is your fictional boyfriend or girlfriend crush ?

Pyre from The Rise of Xosha and Janx from The Old Races stories

If you were able to dine and have a one on one with your favorite writer/author who would it be ?

Inger Iversen, Niecey Roy or S Policar.  If we were all at one dinner that would be epic….EPIC

Do just re-read your favorite books ?

All the time. It is a comfort.

Do you ever get in a reading slump like your readers do ?

I’m in one now. I go through short attention spans right before deadline. The shorter the book is that I read, the better.

What is the funniest book you ever read ?

All I read is funny books but The Gryphon Series by Stacey Rourke is laugh out loud with tears in your eyes and Crazy for Love by Victoria Dahl.

Book Sound Track

Can you share your idea of the perfect soundtrack to The Reborn: The Book Of Dain with us?

The Kill by Thirty Seconds to Mars -
My publisher thought The Reborn reminded her of this songs.
Distant Memory by Brienne Moore
Skin by Brienne Moore -
These songs got me in the epic love mood.
I Don't Recall by Lavender Diamond -
This song helped me with the first 2 chapters and chapter 10
There I Go Again by Amos Lee
May I Remind You by Amos Lee -
Amos Lee always gets me in an emotionally raw mood. So if I need to write melancholy he was the go to for this book.
Better Man by James Morrison -
100% how Dain feels for Tara. It is a heavy, swoontastic song for their love.
Beautifully by Jay Brannan -
THIS is Missy's song perfectly.
Honest Face by Liam Finn -
This is how Dain and Dylan feels about Missy. Very torn and it got me in that headspace.
Gawd Above by John Fullbright -
The Faculty / Facility song
Blank Maps by Cold Specks -
Sounds like a jaunty journey song.
Take My Lips by Ferras
Just a Kiss by Lady Antebellum -
Romantic songs that makes me happy and when happy I kill off less people. :)
Never Quit Loving You by Jill Barber -
When I was trying to understand Tara when I couldn't figure out why she kept trying, this song was her perspective.
Darling, Darling, Darling by Justin Townes Earle-
Dain's song for Tara even when I had him interacting with other girls I had to remember who was in his heart.
Look the Other Way by Justin Townes Earle -
This song is for scenes with Bonnie and Dain. Theirs is an interesting dynamic.
Peppermint & Glue by Shannon Little -
This song helped me feel what Bonnie tries to get Dain to understand about Tara.
You Make It Real by James Morrison -
I use this for Dylan when he struggled with Dain's emotions for Tara.
You're Not Alone by Marie Miller -
I love Akila and Dain's relationship. This song is the embodiment of it for them both.
Not Enough by Avril Lavigne -
The ending.
