Excerpt One:
Damien flew through the
window.
“Your Majesty!” I looked
him over and saw his feathers ruffled dirty.
His eyes were wide, and he sounded severely out of breath. “Yes, Damien?
What have you seen?”
“Your sister! She hurt
the Emily lady and the green keeper led her to safety. She has obtained the
first key! What shall we do?”
“WHAT? She’s stronger
than I thought! How could she have
gotten the first key already? That’s
impossible!”
“She has! She passed the
green spirits character test! What are
we going to do?”
"We’re going to have to intercept her at the Blue
Spirit. That will most likely be her
next destination. Let’s go.”
I will find her and end it now.
I cannot risk her getting another key.
It will be my own undoing.
Excerpt Two:
James was special.
He was really a piece of work, always cracking a joke, always
turning a serious situation into a laughing stock. Sometimes it helped alleviate the
awkward. Other times it was pure
hell. Though I had to give it to him. He
was always there for me. There wasn't
one time when I was in trouble that he didn't back me up. For instance, now. Here I was, on the verge of dying in a world
behind a magical mirror, and he came along for the ride. He didn't really have a choice, but
still. After looking at him, it made
people wonder about me. How could this
boring, weird girl be related to the comedian?
My life was somewhat like a Tim Burton character. I felt as if every step I took, could be
documented and put to a Danny Elfman soundtrack.
We made it to
the shore and, instead of Sam tying the boat to the dock, he pushed it back out
into the lake. I looked at him questioningly.
"Emily, if we leave it here the Crow Queen will think
we're back in the city. If we push it back out, it will delay her a bit, making
her think we're still with the Blue Spirit.”
I nodded in agreement and pushed it with him. We all watched as it
floated back into the lake, the current pushing it farther and and farther
away. Suddenly, I saw a very familiar
and terrifying crow on the horizon.

Our Author Interview
What would you have done differently if you were the main
character of your book?
I based the main character off myself, so I don’t think I would
have done anything differently. I played through the book as if I were the one
in her situation. What would I do? Where would I go?
What was your inspiration behind this book?
It was a dream I had in detail back when I was only 14 years
old, so I think that was where the entire inspiration came from :)
Why did you become a writer ?
I was always a writer of some form. I used to be a professional
singer/songwriter/composer. After turning down a record deal when I was 15 I
moved on to writing poetry and short stories. I won several poetry awards and
decided that short stories was where my heart was at. It allowed me to express myself and make me
feel better about certain situations.
As a reader and writer I think it is important to get to know
your fans and make a connection with them as an author who takes the extra step
to hear what their fans think and want in their continued writing is continued
success and key to selling more books .Do you agree with that ?
I do and I don’t! I of
course think it’s super important to listen to your fans, but I try not to
listen to too many. Everyone has different taste and I don’t want to change
myself to the point where I’m not myself anymore. I always take constructive
criticism into account and listen to any questions or change ideas they might
have, but in the end I always go with my gut instinct.
Do you have a favorite author or authors?
I have too many to count, but my two favorites would have to be
C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien!
Do you like to write your books in a continuing series ?
The Color Keepers, is definitely going to be part of a
continuing series, so yes! It’s very fun to write multiples, but I wouldn’t say
I do it with everything :)
If you could date any character from any book, who would it be
and why?
Edward Cullen from Twilight. Yes I know. *Insert scream/sigh
here* What can I say? I’m a twilighter! Shoot me!
What kinds of books do you like to read in your spare time ?
I love to read fantasy/fiction. I find myself re-reading things
like The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings.
Do you cry when writing sad scenes?
Sometimes I do, yes. I know that sounds strange but sometimes I
try and connect with my character on a deeper personal level. So when I’m
writing out a scene that reminds me of my own personal issues, I find myself
tearing up sometimes!
Did you have a Cover Designer ?
Yes, I did! She’s the INCREDIBLE SUPER AWESOME TALENTED
Phatpuppy! She’s so great and my book wouldn’t be what it is without her!
Who is your fictional boyfriend or girlfriend crush ?
Again, it would have to be Edward Cullen!
If you were able to dine and have a one on one with your
favorite writer/author who would it be ?
Definitely J.R.R. Tolkien. Just so I could try and understand
what went on in that fantastic imagination of his!
Do you just re-read your favorite books ?
Yep! I sure do! I re-read The Hobbit about every 6 months. It’s
one of my very favorite stories!
Do you ever get in a reading slump like your readers do ?
Actually, no! I’m such an avid reader. My family makes fun of
me all the time. I’m often compared to Belle from Beauty and the Beast, because
my nose is ALWAYS stuck in a book! Whether it’s on paper or on my Nook Color or
downloaded on my computer. I can’t get enough! There’s too many fantastic books
out there that I might miss out on!
What is the funniest book you ever read ?
I’m really not sure, as I’ve never really read a funny book. I
stick to either fantasy, adventure, romance, or a mixture of the both. I’ve
never read a book that made me laugh out loud.
