Meet Duncan Gaye:

Duncan Gaye writes queer fiction where history, folklore, and everyday life intersect. His novels are populated by gentle giants, lonely dreamers, impossible romances, and ordinary people searching for a place to belong. Whether grounded in realism or touched by a hint of magic, his stories share an abiding belief that compassion is its own kind of strength.

He lives in River Forest, Illinois, where he enjoys composing electronic music, reading, traveling, and relaxing with his two senior dogs.

Blurb:

Lieutenant Alistair Harrow knows the rules of survival during wartime: stay alert, maintain control, and never let the men see you crack. Then, his world explodes. An artillery attack leaves him broken and half-buried beneath the wreckage of a collapsed trench, certain he will die alone.

Until he is rescued by a giant Polish volunteer.

Tomasz Novak says little, but everything about him is deliberate: the way he lifts Alistair, the way he hides them from patrols, the way he binds his wounds with whatever he can find. In barns, churches, and rain-soaked fields, the two men build a fragile refuge out of firelight, shared silence, and the simple fact of refusing to let each other go.

Alistair has no choice but to surrender his control and trust Tomasz with his life. Tomasz discovers that being needed is not the same thing as being wanted. And somewhere along their arduous journey through no-man's land, dependence becomes intimacy, and intimacy becomes desire.

"He would rather die in truth than live in the lies that were handed to him."

This was a heartfelt story that we really enjoyed. Two men trying to survive a war, yet forming an unforgettable bond, who were supposed to be enemies. I loved how Tomasz cares for Alistair while trying to save his life during their difficult times. I thought I would hate the language barrier, but it made things more interesting and more intimate.
The plot is all about survival, which keeps you on edge the entire time. You experience the heart-pounding moments along with its characters. This story is not your typical romance, but it still feels intimate regardless. I have come to love this author's works, and I am glad I took a chance to read this story; it was beautifully written, and I enjoyed Tomasz's and Alistar's story.
