“The reigning queen of the paranormal scene.” —Publisher’s Weekly

For over two decades, Sherrilyn Kenyon fans have been begging to know more about Acheron’s demon. Simi has always been the absolute fan favorite, since the day she first flounced onto pages and won reader’s hearts.

Now those dedicated fans will learn the truth ...

Life as a demon is never an easy one. Orphaned as a child, Simi was left to make her own way in the world of humans. Bound to the Atlantean god who caused the death of her mother, she’s spent her life trying to make sense of a world that baffles her.

But as the gods vie for a power that leaves demons, Dark-Hunters and humans struggling to take sides, Simi can no longer rely on the god, Acheron, for protection. She must find her own way. Not just for herself, but to save the lives of her family and friends.

Only one entity holds the secret she needs to save Acheron’s life. But the price it demands is steep, and it will leave her at the mercy of a creature known for cruelty. Her choice should be easy. Save Acheron at all costs. Yet some prices are too high, and by saving Acheron, she just might destroy everything.

Book Review: The Enchanting Journey of Simi in the Shadow of the Fire Series

Simi’s long-awaited story, penned by the author of the Dark Hunter series and Chronicles of Nick interconnected universe, is a remarkable highlight in this paranormal fantasy. As a beloved character who has appeared across multiple series, Simi is finally stepping into the spotlight in this heartwarming read. This plot masterfully blends mythology, romance, and intricate world-building, delivering a plot that resonates deeply with fans of supernatural fiction.

What makes this book particularly noteworthy is how it captures the evolution of Simi from a mischievous child to a complex, powerful woman over an astonishing span of 1,200 years. The author excels at weaving her growth organically, showing her innocence alongside her formidable nature — brutally deadly yet radiating warmth. This duality is what sets Simi apart in a genre often dominated by grim, one-dimensional characters. Her quirky charm—such as her fascination with food, especially lathering barbecue sauce and hot sauce on everything, or her delight in QVC shopping—injects a refreshing humor that lightens the darker themes without undermining the stakes.

The emotional depth in Simi’s relationships is another of the novel’s strengths. The tender bond with her father, Acheron, who would gladly burn the world to protect her, serves as the emotional backbone of the story. Likewise, her friendships with figures like Styxx and Thorn bring warmth and complexity, revealing her capacity for loyalty and love despite the centuries of hardship she has endured. The subtle, unspoken tensions—such as her secret affection for Thorn—add layers to her character.

The plot moves deftly between past and present, offering glimpses into a rich, mythic history that propels the plot and fleshes out the world. The seamless integration of time periods and mythologies gives the story a luminous texture that keeps readers engaged, balanced perfectly by moments of intense action and personal revelation.

A word of advice for newcomers: this book shines brightest if you’ve already immersed yourself in the Dark Hunter saga, especially Acheron’s story and the Chronicles of Nick. Without that background, some nuances and deep emotional payoffs may not fully register. Simi’s tale is less of a standalone fantasy and more of a rich continuation for those who appreciate long-term character development and crossover storytelling. The characters were fantastic, as there were many you loved and others you despised. 1200 years later, Simi still loathes the heifer goddess, and everytime she calls her that we laugh out loud.

In conclusion, this novel is a triumph both as a fantasy epic and as a character study. It offers something for lovers of dark supernatural tales with a heart—combining humor, mythology, love, and fierce loyalty into a beautifully unforgettable package. Readers who cherish immersive, character-driven fantasy adventures with complex emotional landscapes will find it a rewarding read. We loved it! Can any heroine remain so real and endearing after 1,200 years? Simi proves she can, and I can’t help but wonder how many hearts she’ll win next.
