Review for Lover Forbidden by J.R. Ward

Forbidden Lover
by J.R. Ward
The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series #23
Release: September 9th, 2025
Length:432 Pages

The aristocracy is making a run for the throne in this latest thrilling, star-crossed paranormal romance entry in J.R. Ward’s #1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

When Lyric goes out for the night, she’s not ready for a brush with death—and she’s really not ready for the male who comes out of nowhere and saves her. Her family, especially her father, Qhuinn, are so relieved she’s okay, but all she can think about is her mysterious savior.

Without telling anybody, she seeks out Devlin, and they are immediately drawn to one another. Her near-death experience has given her a fresh appreciation for life and the desire to live it to its fullest, but she has no idea that he’s hiding a secret—or that he could be the key to ending the war between the Black Dagger Brotherhood and the lessers forever.

This installment follows the story of Lyric, daughter of Quinn, Blay, and Layla. The narrative explores the forbidden romance between Devlin and Lyric. The romance between Lyric and Dev is a slow burn that is tested by deception and heartbreak, creating a compelling and engaging read. The story delves into the complex world of second-generation vampire warriors, exploring their individual challenges.

Lyric, an influencer, is reevaluating her decisions while Dev is struggling. Upon hearing Dev's story, we were surprised by what we discovered. It's typical of Lyric to choose a partner more complex than anticipated.

Despite their struggles, they are drawn together by a strong connection. However, their relationship is jeopardized by the secrets they keep about their identities, which could lead to their separation.

This story is packed with secrets, family drama, chemistry, grief, anger, endearing characters, and love.

The cast includes a mix of characters from the Black Dagger Brotherhood (BDB) and the second generation of warriors. LW and Shulli are dealing with their own personal struggles, and the intensity of their situations is evident. Bitty's warning is more relevant than ever. LW is currently unpredictable and volatile. While we have gained some insight into why LW is so angry, his disrespectful comments about his mother were unacceptable.

We love that Wrath is gracing the pages once again. Bitty, our heart goes out to you. The story has heartbreak written all over it.

The complex plot delves into family drama and tension, while also touching on themes of acceptance and redemption. A new Omega emerges, determined to dismantle the vampire hierarchy, which puts the vampire aristocracy and the Black Dagger Brotherhood at risk.

The romance between Lyric and Dev is tested by deception and heartbreak, making for a compelling and engaging read.
