In the future dystopian
society of Cabal, the government instills equality for all and offers its
citizens the perfect system. There is food, shelter and jobs for everyone. The
one requirement is to follow the rules without question, including the
government's match in marriage and "The Day of the Chosen", a lottery that
randomly selects families to conceive children as natural means hasn't existed
in generations. Following her eighteenth birthday, Olivia Parker accepts her
requirement to marry her childhood best friend, Joshua Warren, and is eager to
start her work assignment and new life when it all comes abruptly to an end as
she's arrested and thrown in prison. The only crime committed, her existence.
Olivia is unlike the rest of the world born not from "The Day of the Chosen."
The truth haunts the government and puts her life in grave danger as one simple
fact would destroy the perfect system.
With Joshua's help, Olivia breaks free of
prison and is forced on the run. Together they set out to find the promised
rebel town in search of a new home and new life together. Their situation seems
less than promising as they reach the town of Haven. New rules and customs must
be adhered to in order to stay. Leaving would mean most certain death in the
large expanse of the Gravelands. Time is running out as the government mounts
an attack to destroy Olivia and bury her secret with her. Thrown into a world
unlike their own, they must quickly adapt to survive.

Excerpt # 1
I sighed softly and did something I'd only read about in
forbidden novels. I leant in, brushing my lips against his. The kiss was soft
and chaste. It lasted no more than a mere second before I pulled back.
"What was that, Olive?" He gave me a horrified look and all I
could feel was my stomach somersault. I knew romance and love weren't ever
spoken of in Genesis. There was no need when the government knew who was perfect
for one another, and children were won by lottery and conceived in a lab.
Intimate acts were considered unnecessary.
"I read about it in a book," I whispered, afraid I'd done it
all wrong. "It was a kiss," I breathed, chewing on my bottom lip nervously. I’d
never kissed anyone before and worried he thought it was terrible. I’d never
seen two people share a kiss, I didn’t quite know what it was supposed to look
like, but I thought I’d done it right after reading about it. My hand reached
out, grabbing his arm. "Please don't be mad at me." I breathed. "You have to
swear you won't tell anyone!" Joshua hesitated for only an instant before he
leaned in, taking another taste from my lips trying again. The second kiss was
softer and satisfied both of our curiosities. My heart raced and my skin warmed
to his touch. "I thought today was going to turn out so much worse," I
confessed.
Joshua laughed as he pulled back slightly, staring at me. His
eyes had darkened a deeper richer shade of blue. I'd never seen his eyes change
colors before. His fingers moved to tickle my stomach with a grin. "Worse?
Really? You're not happy you married me? You're just relieved it wasn't someone
worse?"
"No!" I shrieked, "That's not what I meant!" I tried to catch
my breath, but he hardly gave me a second more than necessary. I pulled from his
ticklish grasp, jumped from the couch and ran
across the room in a fit of laughter. He quickly followed,
jumping over the sofa as he was just inches from me. He was close now, smiling
and trailing behind me as I ran toward the bedroom. It was probably the worst
place I could go, trapped between Joshua and a mattress. I felt him tackle me
down onto the plush bed, his hands skimmed my stomach but he was no longer
tickling me. The laughter still hadn't subsided.
"Breathe," Joshua said, staring intently at me.
"Trying," I gasped between fits of laughter. Lying down helped
settle the feeling of my
racing heart, and after a moment I shifted along the mattress,
reaching out to him. "I want to tell
you a story," I insisted as my fingers found his cheek. "One I
read in a book." I wanted him to learn the things I had about love and romance.
I couldn't help but feel my body stir with a strange fire and warmth as he
loomed just above me. Staring up at him I froze on the mattress hearing the
latch click on the front door. I knew it had been locked.

Our Author Interview
What would you have done differently if you were the main
character of your book?
That’s a tough one, because I have the ability to control what
my characters do - I make them do what I want them to. At the same time, I think
the main character is stronger than I am, willing to run away and leave her
mother behind because she knows it’s the only way to survive. I wouldn't have
done that and because of it - I'd probably have been killed off by the third or
fourth chapter!
What was your inspiration behind this book?
Oh a lot of things. For starters, the economic system and the
way our current society is - there’s lots of homelessness, job loss, people
barely getting by and I thought ‘what if these things didn't exist’. I also know
that no perfect society can ever truly be perfect. We might strive to achieve
that but something always stands in the way. Which, is why I liked the idea of a
world that was truly infertile (without the help of scientists
intervening).
Why did you become a writer ?
I love to write. I've been writing since I was about fifteen
and most of the time, the stories I would share over the internet or tuck away
on a file somewhere on the computer. I finally wanted to share my writing with
the world.
As a reader and writer I think it is important to get to know
your fans and make a connection with them as an author who takes the extra step
to hear what their fans think and want in there continued writing is continued
success and key to selling more books .Do you agree with that ?
Definitely! I interact all the time with readers and fans of
the story. I answer emails, chat on twitter & tumblr with fans and am so
pleased that Aberrant has gotten the positive
response that it has! I also have sent out some autographed bookmarks to fans,
across the world.
Do you have a favorite author or authors?
I love John Green’s writing. It just about always makes me
cry. My favorite book by him is The Fault in Our
Stars. You can’t read that book and not feel something.
Do you like to write your books in a continuing series
?
I do because I personally feel like you become more attached
to the characters and you can explore a lot more over three (or five) books than
you can over one. I've also been told in writing young adult books, there’s a
certain word count you have to adhere to, especially as a new author. The only
way to get around this and tell the story you want to, is by making your novel
into a series.
If you could date any character from any book, who would it be
and why?
Oh gosh, well it'd probably be Jace from The Mortal Instruments but he’d have to be a few years
older. Of course, if I was dating him, I’d probably feel a little bad for Clary.
Oh well!
What kinds of books do you like to read in your spare time
?
I absolutely love Young Adult novels. Lately, I've been
sticking with the Dystopian genre but there’s a few paranormal fantasy books
that have really gotten to me (Die for Me by Amy Plum).
Do you cry when writing sad scenes?
Yes! Especially when you kill off characters you love. It’s
horrible to read and just as hard to write.
Did you have a Cover Designer ?
For the paperback, I designed the cover using stock images.
The publisher, LazyDay Publishing designed the eBook cover.
Who is your fictional boyfriend or girlfriend crush
?
Katniss Everdeen is pretty awesome.
If you were able to dine and have a one on one with your
favorite writer/author who would it be ?
Veronica Roth and I'd hope she’d give spoilers for the next
book in her series, Allegiant.
Do just reread your favorite books ?
Not very often. There are so many new books I want to read and
barely have time for, it’s rare that I reread a book.
Do you ever get in a reading slump like your readers do
?
Sure, it happens more so when I'm reading a book that’s way too
slow and bogged down with detail. Then, when I finally finish it, I'm not sure
what I want to read because I don't want it to be anything like the last novel.
So, I usually ask for a recommendation from someone that knows what I like and
can give me an honest opinion on what to read. More often than not, that fixes
the trick!
What is the funniest book you ever read ?
Funniest book? I read an english to aussie translation guide
before I went to visit Australia. Yes, I know down under they speak English but
I thought it’d be fun to learn some of their lingo. Turns out most of the lingo
in the book, no one in their right mind would say!
