Breath—Breaking Benjamin.  

Come on—this is so much of Rob and Scar’s somewhat tortured relationship.  “So sacrifice yourself/and let me have what’s left/I know that I can find/the fire in your eyes”.  Oh yeah. 

Seven Nation Army (Glitch Mob Remix)—The White Stripes.  This song not only powers me through just about EVERYTHING, but it totally captures Scarlet’s inability to give up.  But it HAS to be the remix, because it’s so much more driving and intense than the original song.  Awesome remix. 

Face Down—The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.  

Scarlet goes through a lot of dark things in this book, from handling Rob’s PTSD to her husband’s abuse to dealing with guilt and responsibility for the pain of others. This is a song that put me in a better place to write that. 

Powerless—Linkin Park.  This is another Rob and Scar song for me: “You held it all/but you were careless to let it fall/you held it all/and I was by your side/powerless”.  UGH!  Love. 

What I’ve Done—Linkin Park.  

LADY THIEF is mostly about consequences, known and unexpected, fair and wildly unfair, and this song always captures the pain of that kind of fallout for me.

 

Famous Last Words—My Chemical Romance.  “I am not afraid to keep on living/I am not afraid to walk this world alone”—This is Scarlet’s power ballad.  Over and over again.  There are these moments that are so amazing to write, when Scarlet just stands up and asserts who she is, and I can feel this insane energy coming to me through her, and this song just nails it.  Okay—I wasn’t going to be spoilery, but I can’t listen to this song without thinking of a very specific moment—so I’ll try to be specific without giving anything away!  Scarlet is inside the castle and finds out there’s a riot outside the gates, and as she makes her decision for how to act, LISTEN TO THIS SONG. 

Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)—

Gary Allan.  I know—I know!  Not exactly in keeping with the other ones, but my iTunes could probably get me tagged by a database for dissociative identity disorder.  Something I felt while writing this book, that I think bleeds into Scarlet more often than I really realized, is how to keep going when you’re exhausted, emotionally and physically both.  And this song is like the emotional hug I wanted and I wanted to give Scarlet.

I am shamelessly addicted to staying up far too late (it feels like stealing time), diet coke (it burns so good), Scotland (stupid country stole my heart and won’t give it back. Interpol has been ineffective for prosecution) and thieves (so I guess I’m not that mad at Scotland).

“The Amba are coming!” I yelled to Caleb, and pointed down the hall.

His eyebrows came together in a puzzled frown, and he turned. The beam of his light skimmed past a huge, striped, four-legged form as it slid around a corner a hundred feet down the hall and shot toward us like an arrow. Behind it there were more.

“Run!” I screamed.

The tiger-shifters in the cells shrieked en masse a half-second later.

Caleb zoomed past me, taking the light with him. “Come on, Dez!” he shouted. “There’s no time.”

As the light faded away, I saw the hands reaching through the bars, taut, outstretched in terrible desperation. Voices called to me to let them out, to set them free.

Forty feet farther on four tigers, bigger than horses, flew toward me, fangs bared, ears back.

I shifted.

It took no more than a single pulse of my heart here in Othersphere. One moment I was an elongated version of my girl self, the next I was tiger-incarnate.

I had never felt such might, had never controlled my every muscle, every whisker with such ease. Coiled within me was all the potency of the earth beneath my feet, of the air within my lungs, of the great living moon outside. I was a nation, a symphony. And nothing in this world or the next would stop me.

In a single bound I was at the entrance to the cells. The people inside drew back, squawking with fear. The Amba were pouring down the hallway like water unleashed from a dam, two seconds away.

I touched the roots guarding the cell on the right with one paw, and on the left with my tail, snarling a command. They parted for me. I had time to see the astonished faces in the prison cells, time to find the flashing dark eyes of the man who had first called out to me. I nodded to him.

He smiled, and the air around him parted like a curtain. He was a tiger now, too, a Bengal tiger smaller than I or the Amba ahead, but unafraid and ready to fight.

The other tiger-shifters saw and followed suit in both cells. They spilled free like a striped, roaring river.  It was an army of tiger-shifters.
