SNEAK PEEKS:
A Wonderful Life by Mimi Barbour
Prologue
“Clarence, you haven’t stopped watching Noel Bradford for days. What in the world is happening to that young man?”
“I’m glad you noticed my preoccupation, Sir. I’m afraid he’s not doing too well. Do you remember a man called George Bailey?”
“Certainly, I do. Wasn’t he the reason you got your wings?”
“Yes, that’s him. Well poor Noel Bradford is heading in the same direction; he’s on the bridge right now, ready to jump. I’m thinking it’ll take the same interference to stop him from killing himself that it took to prevent George from doing the same thing many years ago.”
“I see. Then what are you waiting for, Clarence? You must go and save him.”
“I suppose you’re right. I just hate the thought of that icy water. It took me forever to warm up the last time.”
“Clarence, if you stop that poor fellow from ruining all the lives of the people who will one day love him, I’ll send you the wherewithal to get warm, now off with you. There’s no time to waste.”
Chapter One
Noel Bradford never believed himself to be a coward, a weakling who gave up in troubled times, a man whose shoulders were so narrow they couldn’t bear misfortune.
He was wrong.
Four days ago, when the police had knocked on his door to give him the horrifying news that his parents and their driver, his only brother, had all been killed in a car accident, he’d thought nothing could get worse.
They were heading to their favorite resort in Aspen when their car careened over the bank of the mountainous road, dropping into a lake probably 400 feet below. The back end of the car, where the license plate could be seen through binoculars, proved it was their vehicle and the chance of any survivors was nil.
A Royal White Christmas by Leanne Banks
Chapter One
A baying howl cut through the early December night, even through the walls of the cottage Brice rented. He glanced up from the material he was studying and the baying howl echoed again. The fireplace crackled, and Brice knew the snow was still falling.
Again, the baying howl broke through the quiet.
Sighing, Brice rose from his laptop and peered out the window. The floodlights revealed nothing. He was going to have to brave the cold, he supposed.
Tugging on his boots, jacket and gloves, he opened the door and trudged outside. “Talk to me beagle or hound,” he muttered.
Another howl cut the air. Several moments later, Brice found the beagle wagging its tail, its leash wrapped around a tree trunk. The beagle whined and barked. He immediately noted that the dog was female. “Well, good evening to you, Miss. A fine mess you’re in. Let me help you out.” He unwound the leash and waited for the beagle to run for freedom. Instead the dog came at him and licked his hand.
“I know you have an owner,” he said. “That’s a nice leash.”
The beagle continued to nuzzle at him and whine.
“I guess you can stay the night. It’s a nasty one,” he said and looked at a tag. “Brandi,” he read. “I’ll give your owner a call, but you can stay the night.”
Brice pulled off some chicken and rice from his leftovers and offered it to the dog. She gobbled it up quickly. “You have a good appetite,” he said and dialed the number on the dog tag. The number rang and rang then disconnected. Brice frowned. “That’s not good,” he muttered to himself and punched in the number again.

EXCERPT:
“You didn’t sleep with him, did you, Gem?” Brooke said in a sleepy voice laced with undisguised disapproval the second I answered.I snorted, though I wasn’t surprised at Brooke’s question. I had jumped into sex and asked questions later during the time she and I lived together. Sex made me feel better when I didn’t feel good. But later I felt empty. “No, I haven’t. I’m in the spare room.”She sighed into the phone. “Good.”“Who’s fucking?” I heard Dylan’s voice in the background.“Private conversation here,” she grumbled back at him.“No. I’m over at his house. I was drinking at Fuel, and he showed up,” I said, explaining a little of what was going on with Benjamin, leaving out the gambling, and my lack of funds.“I thought you broke up a while ago?” she said confusion evident in her tone.“We did. He disappeared for a while and then came back, and I made the mistake of giving him a second chance. He’s still on the lease,” I grumbled.“Just tell the manager and move out,” she suggested.“Yeah. I suppose I could,” I muttered. I could if I hadn’t moved in and been added to his lease. Since he’d practically cleared my bank account, I didn’t have the last, or first months’ rent, nor the security deposit that most places required up front. I couldn’t even afford a place of my own once he left. It had gone tits up, but that was for me to sort out.“As for Knox,” she continued, “you don’t want to rebound with him. I hate to be selfish, but my wedding plans are at stake. The two of you sleeping together and it going bad could make for an awkward wedding day.”“I’m not rebound hooking up with Knox. He offered to let me stay over tonight. That’s all. Your wedding is saved, Bridezilla,” I joked. Half-joked. Brooke was being a right fairy princess when it came to her wedding.“Okay. That came out wrong,” she said apologetically. “I just don’t want you hurt. Knox likes the ladies. He’ll sleep with you, but it won’t go any further than that. He’s not boyfriend material.”The phone muffled.I heard Dylan’s voice faintly say, “I’ll go if you let me speak to her.”“Dylan wants to speak to you,” she said. Her voice was strained.“Alright,” I agreed. Dylan was fine. I didn’t mind his insight. She switched the phone over to him. “Gemma. Ignore Brooke’s cock-blocking. Knox wouldn’t mind the rebound fuck. Trust me. He’s over that silly shit from that dinner. You go on. Just don’t be weird at the wedding and we’ll all be good.”“No, that’s terrible advice, Dylan,” Brooke said once she was back. “She’s my friend, and I want her to find someone who wants a relationship.”I sighed. Brooke was deliriously happy with Dylan, and I knew she wanted me to have the same. I agreed with her. I didn’t see how Knox and I would go together apart from sex. I wanted more than that for myself.“Seriously,” she said. “If you’re a little interested in Knox…I know you just saw him again. But now that you have…”“He’s surprisingly nice.” And gorgeous. Although annoyingly narrow-minded about a few drinks out. I hadn’t been off my head or anything.“It all just came as a shock, him stepping in and carrying me away to his home.” I explained what happened.“Dylan would have done the same. Some of the players are a bit out there. Nice could hold an ulterior motive.”I laughed. It was Brooke’s way of saying “sleazy.”“But they have good hearts. They’re very protective of and caring about each other’s families. If Knox hadn’t been there and Dylan had seen you, he’d have done the same thing. You know, since you’re not going to have sex, he could be a good friend in the city.”I glanced over at the door. I had my doubts, though I told her, “Yeah. Maybe.”

excerpt

Excerpt from Chapter 9 of Concealed (Dark Alliance #2)

Maddie made her way into the rotunda of the hotel that had once served as the Charles Street Jail. The amber light cast too many shadows, making it hard to make out faces. But there was one face she couldn’t mistake. Jack stood at the bar, looking heart-stoppingly debonair in his black tuxedo. It took more than a little effort to drag her gaze away and focus on the others milling about the rotunda.

“Do you have eyes on any of our companions for the evening?” Jack asked as Maddie nodded in greeting as she passed by an actor she recognized but whose name she didn’t recall.

The actor didn’t hide the fact that he was looking her up and down, but when he started walking toward her as if to engage in conversation, Maddie turned on her stiletto heel and headed in the opposite direction.

“Negative,” she told him. “You?” When Jack didn’t immediately respond, her gaze drifted back toward the bar and locked with his from across the distance. “Jack, do you copy?”

#

Jack took another sip of his wine, trying to disguise the fact that the sight of Maddie had made him momentarily speechless. She was lovely beyond compare—her thick dark hair swept off her neck into an elegant arrangement, long curls having slipped out to rest against the delicate curve of her throat. The little black dress she wore accentuated the curves he’d often enjoyed tracing gently with his fingertips. His fingers tingled at the remembrance of the nights they’d shared together and of how close he’d come earlier in the day to being able to caress her in the way he so longed to.

And he nearly had. If he hadn’t questioned her certainty about where things were going that afternoon, there was no question how far things would’ve gone. But he was determined not to push her into “falling into bed” with him again, as she’d put it. They’d rushed toward satiating their yearning for one another far too quickly before, and Maddie had bolted. He wasn’t about to make that mistake again.

So why did he feel like he’d fucked up by bringing everything to a screeching halt just as they were revving up?

“I’m here, Mads,” Jack murmured, a familiar ache in the center of his chest.

Regret. Ah, yes, he knew it all too well . . .

Book Blitz and Giveaway for Hunted Lisa Hughey (ALIAS, #2)

Hunted
Lisa Hughey
(ALIAS, #2)
Publication date: February 28th 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

Hunted: There’s only one thing worse than seeing your unrequited crush every day at the office…and that’s getting trapped with him in a snowy mountain cabin.
Maria Torres has been through hell and back. A former kidnapping victim, she’s used to being famous for all the wrong reasons and having people handle her with kid gloves. And it seems that the man of her dreams, Dwayne Lameko, is no different.
So when an ALIAS client requests her presence on an op, Maria believes she’s ready to spread her wings and prove all her co-workers wrong…especially Dwayne. But when danger follows them into the wilderness, Maria has no choice but to prove to herself and Dwayne that she’s strong enough to handle anything…even his love.
Maria Torres was first introduced in the Family Stone series, Still the One. She finally gets her happily ever after.
EXCERPT:
He was sorry? She stepped to her left, trying again to go around him and get away from his dominating presence. “I don’t need your pity.”
He stepped to his right, blocking her way again. He loomed over her, but she didn’t feel threatened. Caged, anxious to get away from him? Yes.
But not scared. She knew in her soul he wouldn’t hurt her.
“You really think pity is what I feel?” He tipped his head, bringing their faces closer together. So close she was again aware of the flecks of brown and green and gold in his dark eyes.
“No. Yes. I don’t know.” She’d been lost for eight years. Social cues bewildered her. She had no idea what he was thinking. She only knew she needed to get away from him.
But he appeared oddly hurt.
His broad shoulders blocked the fading light from the window, casting the kitchen in shadows and mystery.
“I would never hurt you.”
Not physically. “I know.”
As if he couldn’t help himself, he cupped her shoulders in his big palms. Maria’s breath caught. Held.
He was touching her again. Third time today.
#
Dwayne frowned. Maria had tensed beneath his hands.
On the ride from the airport, the scent of her shampoo had swirled in his senses. When she’d stroked the leather seat of the of the Range Rover, he’d started to get an erection, imagining her stroking him in more intimate places. But that was never going to happen.
His stomach churned with regret. “Then why are you still so upset?”
Her body language was all wrong. She was stiff, uncomfortable, and he didn’t know why. Her shoulders were delicate beneath his much larger palms. “No one touches me.”
Shit. He lifted his hands away from her body, fast. “Sorry.” Jesus, he’d apologized to her more in the past hour than he’d apologized to anyone in years. He was a “live and let live” guy with solid core values and a confidence in his moral compass.
“No. No.” She straightened her shoulders, stared defiantly. “No one touches me.”
His heart clenched. No one touched her? He thought about his family. They were always touching. Affectionate. He recalled her stiffness in his mother’s arms.
“Why?”
“They’re afraid.”
Dwayne snorted. She was five feet of nothing with soft curves and a sweet smile. “Of what?”
She shrugged. Looked out the kitchen window over the sink. “I’m a freak,” she said softly. “Nature or nurture. Except I didn’t have any nurture for…a while.”
“I’m sorry.”
She stomped her foot. “Don’t be sorry. Talk to me.”
How could she throw him so far off his stride? “I am.”
“Not like you talk to other…people.”
Other people?
“Women. Dwayne.” Once she let go, she let go. “Other women. You flirt, you tease. But with me, you just….”
Avoid. Of course he did. He wanted her far too much.
What the hell had Jillian been thinking to pair them together on this op? He took an instinctive step back.
“Am I so repellent then?”
What? “It’s not you.”
She laughed harshly. “C’mon, Dwayne. I might have been in forced solitary confinement for eight years but even I know that’s bullshit.”
He blinked. He’d never heard her swear before.
“It’s not bullshit,” he began defensively.
She snorted, that little sound of derision goading him. “Right.” Her sarcasm hit him in the gut. When she didn’t argue any more, didn’t fight back, underscoring the truth that she didn’t believe him, something snapped.
“I’m attracted to you.” The confession burst out of him with an alarming speed.
Her mouth opened and closed like she was a fish out of water. “What?” she said faintly. A deep burgundy flush spread up her neck and over her face, her eyes sparkling with temper. He’d clearly rendered her speechless.
“You heard me the first time.”
