In this spirited romance, New York Times best-selling author Heather Graham draws on her love for Florida and its rich history. This lusty tale of intrigue and passion, set in the tumultuous years of the Seminole Wars, shimmers with the colorful energy of Florida’s vibrant landscapes.

Teela Warren is a southern beauty, raised in the gentility of a vast plantation. When she first travels to the Florida Territory, she is overwhelmed by its exotic wilderness. And when she encounters half- Native James McKenzie there, her desires are aroused in ways that are as strange and wonderful as the untamed countryside. But their love is perilous, and war threatens to put them on opposite sides of the bloodshed.

Captive has won the praise of romance readers nationwide with its provocative tale of love and war. Bringing to life the Europeans and Native Americans who struggled to control Florida during the turbulent first half of the nineteenth century, Heather Graham has captured all the perils and excitement of one of the fiercest struggles for territory in our history.

This is the second book in Graham's 19th -century Old Florida's McKenzies series, which explores the passionate romance between James MacKenzie and Teela Warren. Set in the Florida Territory in 1837, the story follows Teela Warren, a southern belle, who is saved by James McKenzie, a half-breed Seminole known as Running Bear. Teela is initially brought to Florida by her cruel stepfather, Major Michael Warren.

Despite their differences, Teela and James are drawn to each other, navigating the challenges of their forbidden love amidst the backdrop of the Indian wars. As the story unfolds, Teela and James struggle with their feelings for each other, torn between their desires and the societal expectations that threaten to keep them apart.

We were captivated by this tragic yet beautiful love story. Despite the apparent animosity and push-and-pull dynamic between the two characters, the story reveals that James, also known as Running Bear, suppresses his feelings out of concern for Teela's safety. James grapples with conflicting emotions, torn between his love for her and his fear of losing her. Teela experiences similar inner turmoil. The intense passion and chemistry between them speak louder than their words.

With vivid descriptions of the Florida landscape and historical context, Graham paints a compelling portrait of love and conflict in a tumultuous time. The novel delves into themes of identity, passion, and prejudice, offering a poignant exploration of the complexities of relationships and the power of love to transcend barriers.

This is one of our favorite historical series. Jared MacKenzie James brother's story starts in Runaway.
