Mason Dixon by Eric R. Asher Book Blitz and Giveaway

Mason Dixon – Monster Hunter Episode 1

Eric R. Asher

Publication date: April 21st 2017
Genres: Adult, Urban Fantasy

They are the first line of defense against the things that go bump in the night.
They are the keepers of a centuries-old legacy of The Church defending the world against the forces of darkness.
They are a bunch of highly armed rednecks, internet video celebrities, soccer moms, and assorted broken nutjobs.
They are the new Templars, and things are about to get weird.
From the pages of Bubba the Monster Hunter comes a new series featuring the Hunters from around the United States hunting down monsters, fighting off supernatural baddies, and making life really, really bad for the things that hunt people.
He’s Mason Dixon, and he’s a bona fide internet celebrity. He has his own video series, a pistol that deserves its own area code, and a high definition video camera, and he’s not afraid to use any of them.
In this introductory urban fantasy novella, we meet Mason, his right hand Emma, his “handler” Noah, his anime-styled hacker friend Himari, and more monsters than you can shake a stick at. Unless it’s a really big stick.
With Mason, it’s always a big stick. This first novella in the series follows Mason through the wilds of Missouri as he hunts down monsters that hunt men, monsters that eat chewing tobacco, and monsters that make pancakes. And there’s moonshine.
And then Bubba the Monster Hunter shows up.
The New Templars novella series is a new series of short novels, similar to BookShots. Mason Dixon – Monster Hunter is the first in the series by popular urban fantasy and steampunk author Eric R. Asher.
EXCERPT:
“Out,” I said. “Get out of the pit. Safeties off.” I raised the stock to my shoulder and swept the area around us again.
Emma slipped and crashed into the pit, sending a cascade of stained white bones over the edge to clatter down into the limestone depression. We waited, and I could hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears.
Boom.
We both froze. I don’t care how many times you’ve encountered something in the wild, you still freeze for a split second.
Boom.
“Move!” I hissed, backpedaling while keeping my tranquilizer aimed around Emma. She was almost out. We could get back on the ATVs and come back with bigger guns. 10cc darts? I should have brought the 50cc cannon. This was a mistake. The old man wasn’t crazy at all.
Boom. Boom. Boom. BoomBoomBoom.
The gowrow erupted from its lair like it had been spit forth by an angry god. Its stubby, bulbous body might have been humorous paired with its long scaly neck if not for the tusks fit for a mammoth gleaming in the dying sun. It would take that creature zero effort to kill us in one charge.
Its movements seemed awkward, but its attacks were practiced. The gowrow swiped at Emma with a four-toed webbed foot, a lethal claw extending from each digit. She fell backwards and rolled away, barely avoiding the attack.
Any doubt this gowrow was a maneater fled in a heartbeat.
I cranked the air pressure as high as it would go on the tranquilizer gun and fired. The dart rose slightly in a wind disturbance created by the massive creature and pinged harmlessly off the field of spiky scales lining its back. I cursed, flipped the butt of the rifle open, and loaded another dart.

“Did you enjoy the dessert? They had been planning on serving crème brûlée, but I remembered you like gelato. Strawberry.” She turned and Kash was standing in the doorway, the tie to his tuxedo undone and the first few buttons of his shirt open, showing off golden skin. Oh, how the girls must swoon over that man. Unfortunately for him, she was a woman and not a girl. She curtseyed, recalling her etiquette classes and going down deep, to show her respect for the crown. “I thank you, Your Majesty.” “Come now, Day. I asked you not to call me that long ago, and now it appears there’s even less reason. We were friends then. We’re going to be husband and wife in a week. Shocking how quickly that woman can move when she wants to.” He looked so composed, but she couldn’t forget that he’d only found out his mother was dying this afternoon. That was when she’d seen the real man. She’d interrupted them with her silly dress and she’d seen the shock and pain on Kash’s face before he’d smoothed it out and gone back to being the polite royal he’d become. “Are you all right?” She asked the question for two reasons. First, she wanted to know the answer and second, to see if they really were still friends. His lips curved up slightly. “I’m faring quite well. We Kamdars are made of sterner stuff than this. Did you enjoy the dinner?” So, not so friendly he would talk about private things with her. It was good to know where they stood. They needed to have a long conversation about how this was going to work. They might be marrying to protect the Kamdar line and to give his mother some peace, but they needed a plan of action about how best to achieve their goals. Partners. That was how she’d decided to look at this. They were partners. And if she ended up governing the kingdom while he was out fucking around with supermodels, she wouldn’t get her heart broken. Just humiliated. Yes, they needed a talk and perhaps a contract. “I enjoyed the meal very much. The company left something to be desired, but I suspect I’ll get used to dining with windbag politicians.” She turned back to the balcony, leaning against it. The view from here was spectacular. Beyond that, it was soothing in a way. “Yes, Mother told me they’re giving you trouble.” He joined her, leaning beside her, their bodies so close but not touching. “I’ll talk to them, ensure you have your funding.” “Don’t. It can wait a few weeks. I need to go back to them and introduce myself as their new queen.” She wasn’t about to let them think she sent her husband in. If he behaved as he so often did, he wouldn’t be around much and it would be up to her to keep everyone in line. “Is that why you agreed to this arrangement? Because you wanted power?” “I agreed because I care about this country. I’ve spent the last ten years of my life working here and trying to ensure that our children get what they need to make it out in the world. I agreed because your mother is excellent at putting one in a corner. I agreed because someone has to and I wasn’t sure who you would bring home if given the chance.” She shuddered at the idea of some brainless model attempting to be a role model for Loa Malian girls. “Ah, you don’t think I have good taste in women.” “I think you have an unquenchable appetite for them, Your Majesty, and that is something we should talk about.” “Ah, the wifely lectures begin,” he said with a sigh. “Please proceed. I’m anxious to get this over with so I can be properly chastened.” “I only ask that you attempt some discretion, Kashmir. I don’t expect you to be faithful in any way, but I do expect you to not humiliate me.” He turned, frowning a bit as though she’d surprised him. “You don’t expect me to be faithful?” It was time for some honesty. “I don’t think you can be. How long have you kept a single woman? A month? Three?” “Six,” he replied. “I was with Tasha Reynolds for six months before we went our separate ways.” “And were you faithful to her?” She already knew the answer to that question. “We had an agreement.” He frowned as though the conversation wasn’t going at all as he’d expected. “She was on set much of the time. She knew I had a highly stressful job, so she was understanding. I gave her the same options.” “Excellent, then let’s be fair with each other. As long as we’re both discreet, this marriage of ours doesn’t have to mean the end of our lives.”

 Dead Time (Excerpt #1)
D. L. Orton
Between Two Evils #3

I stand with the rain hitting my helmet and watch the Cessna ascend into the stormy sky. I feel like an abandoned astronaut on a failed Mars mission, my last chance to go home disappearing before my eyes.
Somehow, I don’t think potatoes are going to save me.
When the airplane vanishes into the dark clouds, I close my eyes and let the tears fall. I imagine myself sitting next to Bearheart in the backseat, wondering if the boys at C-Bay will be nice to me, or if the girls will think I’m dank. I can see Mr. C gripping the armrests and looking nervous as Madders files us up and over the rough air. I smile and tell him not to worry, we’ve got the best pilot in the whole wide world, and he’ll get us out of this nasty weather, no problemo.
A flash of lightning brings me back to the present. The wind is ripping at the loose tabs on my biosuit, hurling huge raindrops against me like projectiles. I have thirty minutes of O2 left on my tank and one emergency air canister. My sketchpad is tucked inside a pocket of my suit, along with the lucky seashell Mr. C gave me, but that’s it. I take a sip of the dwindling water supply in my suit and turn toward the dilapidated biodome, feeling anxious and scared.
Mom always says that bravery is being the only one who knows you’re afraid.
I’m trying to be brave, Mom, but it’s harder than I thought.
All the jeeps and other equipment are gone now, and I count four dingy biosuits slogging toward me through the downpour. I gaze up at the sloped wall of the massive biodome, wishing it didn’t look so… alien.
What would Madders do?
He’d be collecting data, not blubbering like a D-2 who fell off a swing and scraped her knee. Identify the problem, engineer a solution, and Bob’s your uncle.

I force down a sob and get to work.

Griffith took the proffered mug of coffee with a grateful grin, and went out to his car. She was curled in the armchair, reading a medical journal article on the benefits of holistic medicine when he came back inside. In one hand he had a run-down red power drill. In the other, he lifted what looked like a black bike rack. “Is it okay if I put this up? I’ll remove it and fill in the holes when I leave.” She set her new mug of coffee on the table. “Um, sure. What is it, exactly?” “A Rogue.” “A what? Like the character in X-Men?” He gave her a lopsided grin. “No, c’mon. I’ll show you.” She followed him to the open archway where the living room led into the dining room. He looked around the ceiling, and lifted a hand to knock on the wall partition above them. It made a solid sound. “Here should be perfect. There’s enough space for it below the wainscot.” “For what?” she asked, confused. He chuckled, positioned the black rack-like thing on the wall above them, and held it still.“Oh, it’s a pull-up bar?” “Yep.” The loud, electric whirr of the power drill echoed as he fixed the pull-up bar to the wall space above them. She watched his strong legs as he stood on a chair securing the last screws. He yanked on the bar a little to ensure it was in place, and patted the wall. “That ought to do it.” He jumped down from the chair and set the power drill on it. “Want to see it in action?” He’d need to jump a few feet in order to even hold onto it. “If you can reach that thing and still do pull-ups, be my guest. I’ve got to see this.” Griffith chuckled and ducked his head as he peeled off his T-shirt. She did her best not to salivate at the sight of his hard body. The man was all muscle, and didn’t have an ounce of fat on him. “Don’t want to get sweat on it.” He winked at her, balled the shirt up, and set it on the chair. But Sonnet wasn’t listening, her eyes remained glued to his impossible muscles as he jumped up, clutched the bar, and crossed his ankles. He started doing pull-ups. She folded her arms and stared. Hell, she couldn’t pretend not to, even out of courtesy. Her pussy throbbed, and she clenched her thighs together to soothe the ache. “One,” she joked when he got to ten. “Hey, shut it, you. These are, ugh, hard to do.” A small trickle of sweat trailed past the long, faded scars between his shoulders, along the center of his spine, and the crazy image of licking off the droplet filled her brain. “I’ll take your word for it, and let you do all the work.” “Fine by me,” he grunted, and dropped back down. “And that’s how it’s done.” She held onto his shirt while he grabbed some paper towels and dried off, then chucked them in a nearby bin. She handed him the shirt, though what she really wanted to do was bury her nose in it.
Excerpt #2 (NSFW) Sonnet put water in the K-Carafe and listened to the hiss and gurgle of the brew as she got some organic eggs and soy milk out to scramble. She decided to make Griffith breakfast, too, even if it had to wait for him in the fridge. It was nice to have someone to look after again. Hell, after yesterday, he deserved it. She knew she shouldn’t entertain starting something with him with medical school on the horizon, but after spending time with him, a great weight had been lifted off her shoulders, and she was ready to start fresh and tackle her workweek. She sang a little, opened the fridge, and bent to retrieve the bacon from the bottom shelf. A sharp intake of breath filled the silence from a few feet away. From under her arm she saw Griff, half naked in black sweat bottoms with the Police Academy logo. Her eyes drifted to the hard planes of his abs, a sculpted eight pack most men would give their left nut for. His stacked chest rose and fell, and his fists clenched. Like a current in the air, she could feel him trying to keep it together. Her gaze trailed past his ribs and flat stomach, down the sharp V of his hip flexors, to the promise of what lay beneath. Finally, her brain kicked in and she realized her bikini thong was on display with the globes of her ass cheeks parted and raised in the air, like she was waiting for him to grab hold and ride. Her hair chose the wrong moment to slide over her shoulder and into her face, and he let out a strangled moan. Oh, God. She stood and yanked the hem of her shirt down. “Jeez, I’m so sorry. I didn’t think you were up. I was just about to make breakfast before I got changed.” He gulped. Her eyes flicked to the hardened bulge of his cock, which tented against his sweats. He looked like he wanted to devour her. “I…need to use the bathroom,” he growled tightly, then marched down the hall and slammed the bathroom door. She looked at the exposed bottom half of her panties, and rolled her eyes. “Great, Sonnet. Just great.” She turned off the stove, abandoned the breakfast food, and made her way to her bedroom. A stifled moan escaped from behind the closed bathroom door as she passed, and stopped her in her tracks. In any other circumstance she wouldn’t give it a second thought—people moaned all the time because they were tired or relieved—but she listened. It was a certain kind of moan, one she made the first night she’d met him when she touched herself. She heard a distinctive rhythmic thwacking of flesh upon flesh, a series of muffled pants, a grunt, and soft thud against the wall, and her pussy throbbed. She clenched her thighs together and put her palm over her mouth.
Excerpt #3 It had grown dark, and the lampposts in the parking lot were lit. She had a little pep in her step as she walked to the ER doors, but she stopped and didn’t go in. He was there, hands on his duty belt as he talked with a patient near the security desk. Griffith emitted shock waves of sex appeal, even from where she stood. Oh, hell no. She’d never be able to walk past him after what she’d done the other night. She reddened. Not like he would even know about her stupid fantasies, but she would. She’d half forgotten he would be on graves with her, too wrapped up in the exhilaration of getting into medical school and…other activities. Evasive maneuvering seemed the best way to go, so she sidestepped and made her way around to the back employee entrance leading into the ER. She smiled to herself over the minor victory, and pushed against the handle to go in, but it didn’t budge. “You’ve uh, got to pull it.” She turned around, and there he stood, dangling a black Maglite in his hand. She reigned in the growl that wanted to surface. “I’m sorry?” “The door. You need to yank the handle toward you, not push it. There’s a sign.” Sonnet froze, and eyed the PULL sticker she’d been oblivious to, right above said handle. “Of course,” she murmured. “Figures.” Even though he must think her an imbecile, she raised her chin with defiance and muttered her thanks as she tugged on the door. It didn’t move. “Use your badge,” he said. “It’s a security measure so no unauthorized personnel get in.” She glanced at him. He crossed his arms, and his lips fought a losing battle to twitch upward. Sonnet shook her head, flustered, and rooted around her purse for her work badge. “Look, I realize you think I’m a total moron here, but it’s my first night on the floor, my car had trouble starting earlier, and my nerves are all shot to hell. So, I’d appreciate it if you, your ridiculously stacked chest, and all your muscles wouldn’t judge me, okay? I’m nervous enough as it is. We’re not all perfect.” She held her badge to the RFID reader. The second the green light went on, he beat her to the handle and held the door open for her. She didn’t see a wedding ring on his left hand. Hmm. He smirked. “Good to know you like my muscles.” He raised his eyebrows as she clipped past him. “Shut it, Rambo.”
